The melancholic ballad is reminiscent of early My Dying Bride, with Nathan Garrett’s vocal delivery standing out. The longest track on the album Angel & Abyss takes one back to the days of 90s doom metal. Further described as what modern Heavy Metal should be: ambitious, soul-bearing, pristinely written and widely-appealing. Divided By Darkness not only proves to be the most progressive record by Spirit Adrift to date, but also the most diverse one. The first track released from the Phoenix, Arizona-based, Nate Garrett-fronted doom metal outfit’s latest is titled Hear Her, and it’s a heavy metal ripper, just as we’ve come to expect from the band. It’s titled Divided by Darkness, and it’s being released May 10 via 20 Buck Spin. Spirit Adrift couldve followed the more accessible bent of 2019s Divided In Darkness with more of the same but chose to mix things up to an even greater degree with their fourth full-length album.

Providing the listener with a contemporary take on classic heavy metal, Spirit Adrift’s new album is a very fine record, and a very gratifying listen. Mixing traditional heavy metal and rock influences into an equally traditional doom metal base, Divided by Darkness concentrates more on the former aspects of the band’s sound than the latter base style on this new album.

Spirit Adrift’s journey so far has been an enjoyable and interesting one, from the doom metal lengthy epics of Chained to Oblivion, via the streamlined doom/heavy metal hybrid that was Curse of Conception, to now this latest album, which sees the band transitioning more fully to the heavy metal side of the aforementioned hybrid equation.īoasting a warm sound that invites the listener into the band’s well-realised and fleshed-out world, the music has a three dimensional, textured feel. This is the third album from the US heavy metal band Spirit Adrift.
